Do you know if the MPEG-4 container, which is supposedly based on 
Quicktime, is just as "horrible," or did the standards committee omit 
the brain-damaged stuff to come with a better one? Does MPlayer have to 
emulate MacOS to be able to play Quicktime files, or would that be 
necessary to implement the stuff that's been left out of MPlayer so far?

I really don't know the details of the formats; I'm curious because I've 
been playing around with OpenQuicktime to see how easy it is to import 
audio and video from other containers, like AVI and OGM. So far, it 
seems pretty straightforward, since the libraries I'm using do hide the 
details of the format.
