Ahh, here's something:

Basicly, it says you need to set `Option "OverlayMem" NNNN' in
the Driver section of the XFree86 config file. (I'm not finding
"OverlayMem" documented anywhere, however.)

So, you're running at 24-bit depth? You may get better performance for
video (xv and x11) if you start the server in 16-bit (only 2/3 as many
bits!). There are also some other interesting-looking options in the
mga(4) man page concerning overlay mode, that you might like to try to
experiment with (perhaps with the mplayer "xover" driver?).

...and if you're in the mood to experiment, you also might like to
know, that the MGA video cards are the cards for which DRI is closest
to being supported under NetBSD! Erik Reid requested feedback on
patches last month:

(It might be worthwhile, in any case, to re-compile current xsrc on
NetBSD 1.6.1, as XFree86 4.3.0 just missed the cut for NetBSD 1.6.1.)

With that, you could try to build mplayer's "mga" and "xmga" drivers.
It's all very iffy, but someone has to be first...
