Debian Woody 3.0 stable system.
Mplayer-0.90.tar.bz2 compiled using gcc-2.95

Know the standard answer, have done it and been compiling program since
there was a RH5.1.

Problem, mplayer has compiled fine and works but will not work from a
terminal or even a script call, i.e., mplayer -ao oss -vo xv

Mplayer will work perfectly if I click on the menu bar and launch it
from the menu using the run command, grun mplayer.

When launched from terminal, program never fully loads. Output:
mpierce at libranet:~$ mplayer -ao oss -vo xv &
[1] 11380
mpierce at libranet:~$ Using GNU internationalization
