i'm still watching BoB's, so no example, i don't wanna open another terminal. 
hint: find a way how to seek into the position where from you'd like to get 
your thumbnail (by seeking time or bytes, dunno which works better for you). 
then create some fancy named temporary dir under the dir where's your video 
file and cd it. after which, use there that specific video output to a file 
and add -nosound to lower cpu stress, as outputting and compressing a file 
creates a lot of it. after few seconds running of mplayer with somewhat low 
framerate, you'll have a directory full of .jpg files, where from you'll have 
to make your pick.

i'm not saying i'm right :) i don't recall doing this ever by myself, this is 
just something i remember from when i tried out mplayer's different vo's at 
one night.
