Sorry for my earlier post, I hit reply to so I could pickup the address
and didn't realize to change the subject, my question was:

Just curious how I'd go about finding my hardware major/minor number to
use with alsa9 for spdif output.  I have a Shuttle XPC(SK41G) using the
snd-via82xx module .  It's got a single spdif output on the front of the
case.
Alsa seems to find it(as alsamixer shows an "IEC958" and "IEC958 Output"
and "IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA" port.  I have unmuted them and then put
volume up(where appropriate).  I get zero output on my reciever when
playing 
PCM wav files and AC3 streams.
