Which channel do you want to play? Try: tv://channum (ex: tv://22)
This is works for me:

mplayer -vo null -tv 
driver=v4l::norm=PAL:chanlist=europe-west:width=384:height=288:device=/dev/video0:adevice=/dev/dsp 
tv://42
