not always true,
download emu-tools and emu10k1 from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu10k1
and you'll get 2 4 5 6 channels routing at your taste,
moreover the card HW will work both in Dolby Digital 5.1/Stereo,
or in Dolby ProLogic or even Dolby Surround (with other less useful 
effects avaible), you can set the number of your speakers so it can work 
with 2 4 5 6 channels.
try emu-tools it' easy to setup, if sometimes don't works ok try emu10k1 
files from sourceforge instead of the ones with the linux kernel,
you also need a mixer, aumix it's enough ;)
