Thanks for the response!  Actually, with a little research and fiddling,
I was able to resolve both issues...

To enable the network, first I just go into QTopia as normal, which
enables all networking by default. Then I goto the settings/control tab
and tap the shutdown icon, which has a setting to close qtopia, and pick
that.

Once Qtopia shuts down, it goes back to the 5 second delay before it
restarts, at which time you can hit "/" then "a" and it will take you to
a logon with full networking.

As far as the slowness and choppiness of mplayer playback, I simply
upped the cache and now it plays beautifully...

mplayer -quiet -cache 256 <file>

I am crossposting this to the mplayer list in case anyone can use the
tip.
