[MPlayer-users] Why do mplayer and xine crash my X server?

Running xine or mplayer (or even xscreensaver for some reason) will 
totally crash my X server! I have no clue why, there are no errors in 
.xsession-errors, directing mplayer output to a file gives nothing out of 
the ordinary. I'm totally stumped.

Even running xine without parameters will crash the X server soon after I 
see the xine logo.

Is there another place where I can look for possible error messages 
related to X and mplayer?
