I had a CD burned like that too

what I did, after giving up on cdfs that gave me more OOPS than I can 
count, was this:

$ mplayer -dumpstream -vcd 2 /dev/scd0

....

$ file stream.dump 
stream.dump: Ogg-Vorbis compressed sound file

And then the resulting stream dump file was playable with mplayer.
