Actually, mplayer is using xv. Look for the 'VO: [xv] 480x480 => 640x480 
Planar YV12'
line above. That's using xv hardware scaling to display a 480x480 video 
as 640x480. The "Sorry"
message only refers to the mpegpes passthrough output (for hardware 
decoding, which you probably
don't have).
