To extract the first few frames you can fo

mplayer -frames 500 -dumpstream -other_options

and then look in stream.dump.

Alternatively, you can use dumpstream to diagnose for yourself whether
the slowdown is from dvdreading or from mplayer.  If the stream.dump files
plays back fine then its probably authentication with the hardware, right?

Even if the stream.dump file still plays back crappy, you might try to
use mencoder to re-encode the dump.  I have a feeling your audio is screwy
with this dvd.

Lastly, still going with this sound idea, which may be way off, you should
try playing  -nosound  and just see if the video playback improves.
