[MPlayer-users] mencoder: converting avi to mpeg

Hello,

I was wondering to create some vcd's out of the avi-files. I can use the 
tool vcdimager to create a vcs, but this requires an mpeg-file.
I could figure out the options for mencoder to create an mpeg-file.

Something like

mencoder video.avi -o video.mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4

or

mencoder video.avi -o video.mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video

also created a file called video.mpeg, but the contents an avi-file again.

Can someone tell me how to use the options in the right way?
