i have very same system (but 2.4.17) and it works fine for me...
maybe you downgraded your gtk to a nonworking version???

i have p4 + g400 but it shouldn't matter

I tried several old mplayers in the meantime, i can tell you as much that the CVS from feb 13th DOES work, i'll be on a short vacation, but when i get back i'll try to find the exact version on which it breaks.
