you can either use lavc oder install divx and recompile. lavc is recommended
by mplayer-developers. please rtfm more about this using man mencoder and

should be clear then

i don't know, but there are many mails about splitting avis on this list, i

afaik both mpeg and divx are lossy compression-techniques, but divx produces
smaller files than mpeg I/II. they usually just throw away any information you
cannot see / hear (mp3), while zip and other archives (rar, gzip, bzip) keep
all information intact. try searching google.com, i bet you find lots of
information :)
of course you can re-encode mpeg to divx, you get a file that can be quite
smaller and quality stays at the quite same level (if you know what you are
doing -> man mencoder)
