RedHat is a well-known company which focus on crappy compiler shipping 
and development. They first shipped a non-official gcc version which 
had number of bugs. I should note that I was always using Mandrake and 
it's gcc, versioned nearly same, compiled mplayer OK (but failed on 
LAME). Now they seem to break gcc3 too.

I suggest you to try mplayer rpms.
