well you both seem to miss the fact that that mplayer doesn't output to 
stdout anyway, so it's a bit pointless wondering whether it'd work anyway. 
incidentally tho, if you just did a stream copy then it would probably 
work in theory, but it's impossible in ractise anyway so who cares?
