It is easily noticable, and I have it with all my DVDs.
K6/2 500, sb live 5.1, emu10k1 driver cvs 2001/12/02

For example I need -delay -0.3 to gain A/V sync on my Hyppolit DVD :)
Strangely, after "mencoder dvd://1 -ovc copy -oac copy" (NO -delay), it
works flawlessly.

From DVD, -framedrop:
A:  10.2 V:  10.2 A-V: -0.033 ct:  0.005  245/245  75%  6% 10.1% 65 0 46%

With "mplayer dvd://1 -ao sdl" I get crackling audio, like when GUS
runs out of buffer :) (does Live has a buffer?:)

Also DMA is _disabled_ on my drive, otherwise it won't work at all.
