I had a problem when compiling with gcc3 from the redhat rpms once. The error was a "segfault in gcc, please visit bugzilla.redhat.com" ... or similar.
In bugzilla.redhat the problem was already reported. People were advised to
upgrade to gcc-3.1 from rawhide (http://www.rpmfind.net is quite a fast mirror)
However, since this is an upgrade to the gcc package (compared to gcc3 that you
are using now) you may need to first "rpm --erase " all rpms that depend on
gcc3 first, then you will have to "rpm -U" the new gcc packages. You will
most probably need the compat-libstdc++ (and maybe compat-libstdc++-devel)
packages as well, but you will figure this out yourself.
