The delay option is a general option (i.e. for both mencoder and 
mplayer). It seems mencoder and mplayer use the same code to decode the 
source (the difference being is that mencoder places the output through 
filters/codecs/blah and places it into a file), so -delay was 
implemented in mencoder as soon as it was implemented in mplayer.
