[MPlayer-users] ffmpeg<->mplayer question

This might sound like a stupid question, but I'm just trying to get some understanding to the differences.
 The docs say not to simply 'symlink' the ffmpeg/libavcodec tree into the libavcodec dir of mplayer/main.
 This is where my understanding of the issue needs help.  Why is a link insufficient, if it still
has the same files in the folder?  

Thanks, I know this sounds stupid and makes me look like a luser, but hey, we all gotta learn somehow.

PS. I do copy the files as the docs say to do, just want to know why it isn't the same.
