Also consider using gcc 3.0.1 instead of downgrading to 2.95.

Mandrake 8.1 has the gcc 3 rpms on either disk 1 or 2.

To use gcc3 instead of two point nine six you can either edit the
symlinks in
/etc/alternatives, or type "export CC=gcc-3.0.1" before your ./configure
