No, anyway same happens as root, I tried of course ;-)

no, same on linux-2.4.17-rc2

BUT:
with -nogui
it is working???

Very strange. I tested this (with -nogui working, without not) on
2.4.16
2.4.17-rc2
2.4.17-packet
as 
root and normal user
Always the same, -nogui works, -withgui not.
