The problem is in the documentation, which doesn't say that -subcp 
option requires unicode encoded font.

So, go to the TOOLS/subfont-c directory, edit the runme file and 
uncomment the following line:
#unicode="--unicode"

and then run ./runme (you will also need a TrueType or T1 font).
And get the latest freetype. 2.0.6 was released today!
