Hi there all,

Just to clear some things up, I don't have problems, I just have
questions about mencoder / DivX 4.x that I'm hoping you can help me with.

I am running Mandrake 8.1, with GCC3 and so on, and it all seems to work
great with Mplayer and Mencoder. More for the curiosity than need I have
started ripping the 2 DVD's I have to compare quality and so on of
different things.

The first question is: What is the difference between calculating the
bitrate of DivX 3.x, and that of DivX 4.x ? I have searched the internet
but cannot find any good reference as the the difference in the
calculation. Why? Well, I have made a DivX bitrate calculator for Linux
but am doubting whether I'm using the correct formulae. From what I
gather it's very general, especially with DivX 4, and the result could
give you 50 MB more or less...
The way I have it now is to first work out the size of the MP3 audio,
and divide the remaining space on the CD by the film length to retun a
kb/s rate. If anyone is interested http://www.tuxpower.f2s.com/divxcalc.php

The second question is this: If I'm creating a DivX film using the 3
pass system, after the first pass (video) is it possible to change
bitrates, or is the divx2pass.log based on the previous bitrate?

And finally, is there ever gong to be the options of adjusting lighting,
contrast and so on with DivX 4.x? I am referring to the divx 3.x here,
and where from within mplayer it's possible to adjust it while watching
the film. Will this also become a possibility with DivX 4.x or later?

Any ideas would be great,

Thanks
Ralph
