hmm. dup is better than skip, at least for -ovc copy
maybe it is 24/25 fps but has lots of duplicated frames originally.
or it is really variable framerate asf. rare but exists, especially in
low bitrate network streaming contents.

yes. 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97

not yet. maybe with 3-pass encoding it is possible...
(not trivial, needs counting all frames and then divide by time)

not

mplayer uses timestamps, fps doesn't matter.
mencoder needs correct fps as the .avi format only support fixed fps.
