[MPlayer-users] Excessive * audio codec cpu usage

OK, this is a strange scenario.  I have three machines:

server: nfs server with lots of fast disk

capture: captures streams from TV card and writes them to an MPEG file
         with mp1e

pvr: machine with Radeon video card and Yamaha chip based audio card

All are connected together on a 100Mbps Hub.

I run mp1e to capture streams on "capture" and write them to mpeg1
files on an exported filesystem on "server".  The files are encoded
real-time at 5Mbps.

I play streams on "pvr" from the exported filesystem (that capture
writes to) using "-framedrop -vc ffmpeg12 -ao alsa5 -vo vesa:vidix
-double"

If I play a given stream (any stream but the one being captured) while
a stream is being captured here is how it plays:

Why is the cpu usage for audio codec so much higher when playing a
stream as it is being recorded (recording is happening on a different
box recall)?
