yes, i tried this twice. with 48 and 32 MB instead of using the full 64MB. 
playing movies with xvidix:radeon_vid.so hangs whole system... :(

why nonsense? it's not a specific card! i have an hercules board with ati 
8500le so it's an Radeon QL not a real firegl card (they are too expensive 
:)). but I use the firegl drivers from ati, which supports also R200 
chipbased board - so mine -, instead of the radeon drivers bundled with 
Xfree, because they seem to be stable and they have very good 3dfx 
performance.
well, i dunno how to check which xserver-driver is loaded? so it might be the 
easiest to offer an additional module for people like me using fglrx-drivers 
to start mplayer with -vo xvidix:fglrx_vid.so, isn't it?
