you have to pass the iec958-capabable subdevice to ao_alsa9 like:
mplayer -ao alsa9:hw:0,3

its hw:0,3 on most sblives. you need also to set the iec958-playback
switch on your mixer. its called differently on different
souncards/mixers, search for something like 'iec958' or 'digital out'.
