[user at localhost user]$ rm /etc/alternatives/gcc 

[user at localhost user]$ ln -s /usr/bin/gcc-2.95.3 /etc/alternatives/gcc 


depending on what distro you have, this may work or not.
check your /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin for "gcc*" executables
( " ln /usr/bin/gcc* "  and " ln /usr/local/bin/gcc* ")
and change your symlinks accordingly.
