ok , ldd mplayer doesn't show any links to imlib ... however gdk libs 
are linked, and imlib is some gdk thing. I uninstalled imlib 1.9.14 
using my make install log and compiled mplayer where the old version 
(20020315) ran fine and the newer gave the same bugs. I then installed 
imlib 1.9.10 and still same results, same gtk errors. so _something_ in 
my system is to new, and I don't know what.
