there is framebuffer video and overlay video
most programs, pure X windows use framebuffer, Xv and SDL with xv use the
overlay. gamma setting (including xgamma and sdl_setgamma) are for
framebuffer. The Xv driver _may_ offer options to set brightness etc, you
can list these with 'xvinfo'. Afaik TNT cards has no such feature!
Someone mentioned Unreal - it does nothing with overlays, it uses
framebuffer, and even more, the unreal 3d engine calculates lights by
software, so even with no hardware support at all it still can change
brightness by changing colors of vertices in the 3d engine level.
anyway, you may want to check avifile, it now has brightness/contrast/etc
settings via SDL! but afaik it doesn't work with nvidia cards due to some
driver bugs...
