Well installing the OSD fonts did the trick for me :)

Although I *have* seen divx subtitles for Traffic work once without the
OSD stuff. They just wern't synced correctly and generally wasn't too
good; but I did get mplayer to show them.

But for the dvds, the font installation did the trick.
