[Mplayer-users] Using older GCC on recent distros

Well I tried that and I started down the path of attempt installation of
package, download more packages to satisfy dependencies, repeat, repeat
again, repeat some more. I eventually got down to this:
[root at sierra Linux]# rpm -Uhv gcc-2.96-97.i386.rpm
binutils-2.11.90.0.8-7.i386 .rpm cpp-2.96-97.i386.rpm
error: failed dependencies:
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.2.3) is needed by binutils-2.11.90.0.8-7
gcc = 2.96-0.48mdk is needed by gcc-c++-2.96-0.48mdk
egcs is needed by kernel-source-2.4.3-20mdk
now it looks like it wants to upgrade glibc which spells trouble. I have
another reply that says just download and compile gcc-3.0,.. so now I'm
trying that.
