Quite strange. But you should realize that accessing sound card is done
via kernel (with OSS/Alsa/whatever kernel modules). So the only way damage
can be caused is the fault of kernel drivers not mplayer itself. BTW, at
my workplace we have i810 based computers and mplayer works fine with them,
no problem at all. Guess you had a bad hw which died at the same point you
tried to run mplayer by luck.

BTW, lspci continues to show your audio device? Try to drive it with OSS/Free
kernel drivers and let's see what happens.
