I think MPlayer is great
for me it was the reason to uninstall windows
because its playing divx better then any tweaked windows

im ok without framedrop on a celeron 300mhz
with ati expert at work 4mb
with fullscreen 1024*786
using gatos video drivers for ati
(xv support)

try to use the new divx codec 4.02
get it from www.divx.com
it has a install script
after that compile the mplayer
an try mplayer -vc odivx or divx4
(it is a great performance boost)
