This behaves in the same way :(

This taken from mplayer output after running for approx one minute:

$ mplayer -dvd 3 -vo null -ao pcm -benchmark

A:   2.8 V:   4.9 A-V: -2.137 ct: -0.449  114/114  36%  0%  2.2% 0 0

I left mplayer running last night for > 1hr and it captured 10s of audio!
