Edit Makefile and replace the above line with:

    cp mplayer /usr/local/bin

Do the same thing with the other install command line.

Alternatively, change "install" to "ginstall". Your errors seem to indicate
that you are not running GNU install at all.

As a third option, just manually copy the program (mplayer) and the man page
(mplayer.1) to wherever you think is appropriate. This is all "make install"
would have done.
