looks to my like a memory leak, try looking at some memory usage montor ans'd 
see if it constantly increases while mplayer is playing the dvd and also 
tailing syslog to see if kernel killed processes going out of mem is a good 
idea. Memleak might be in your xv driver or mplayer.
