I had same problem with my SuSE 7.3 system utilizing same binutils version, I 
solved it by upgrading to the binutils package from redhat rawhide available 
from rpmfind.net, install with:
rpm -Uhv --replacefiles binutils-2.11.92.0.7-2.i386.rpm
as root user, the --replacefiles is only to replace a conflicting info page 
from autoconf package.
