I think you are using mplayer with oss output and alsa 0.5 oss emulation, try 
using true oss kernel module or upgrade alsa to 0.9.
With current cvs or 0.18pre you can even use gcc 2.96 (think you need to use 
--disable-gcc-checking with configure).
