It's the Question that drives us, Dag B :
> There is a theory that the i686 scheduling of gcc better suits the k6-2.

gcc -c -O4 -march=k6 -mcpu=i686 -pipe -ffast-math -fomit-frame-pointer -Iloader
-Ilibvo -I/usr/local/include -o mplayer.o mplayer.c
cc1: -mcpu=i686 does not support -march=k6

With -mcpu=i686 and -march=i586 it compiles, but benchmark says:
BENCHMARKs: V: 18.692s VO: 5.623s A: 0.000s Sys: 0.334s = 24.650s
BENCHMARK%: V: 75.8308% VO: 22.8124% A: 0.0000% Sys: 1.3568% = 100.0000%

With -mcpu=k6 and -march=k6:
BENCHMARKs: V: 18.439s VO: 5.798s A: 0.000s Sys: 0.369s = 24.606s
BENCHMARK%: V: 74.9366% VO: 23.5646% A: 0.0000% Sys: 1.4988% = 100.0000%

I think no hint is needed for slow machines, use MTRR and Xv, or if possible,
a Matrox card. And buy faster CPU.
