People, autoconf is like the shell.
A good shell does not make good shell scripts.

The _scripts_ have to be good.

So, while autoconf can in the hand of skilled experts produce good
configure scripts, most people do more damage than good.  Before jumping
to any conclusions and going for autoconf because a few newbies asked
for it, wait until the next release and do it right.
