[Mplayer-users] libac3 and sse

Now that's strange...I patched my kernel sources to enable SSE and
compiled and now I can compile mplayer successfully with SSE enabled and
it works;) Sound and
video are working, however it's still more or less a slide show;( Now you
said that ac3 is heavily using SSE, so playback should be faster right?
Now I tried out different audio outputs...I switched from oss to sdl and
now the playback is almost fluent (just a few milliseconds slower than mp3
audio encoded movies)...why does this audio output change the speed that
much? Can it be that ac3 is heavy cpu loading and therefore slower than
mp3 audio movies? And that's why changing the output can increase playback
speed?

PS: I tried out xmmp and xmps .... I decided I am staying with mplayer;)
Just another question: What makes the picture quality of mplayer that much
better than avifile? I compared Armageddon (video:divx (1.4GB of size)
with mp3 sound) and just paied attention on heavily changing scenes like
explosions...in avifile they tend to show huge blocks in the fire and
explosions (low resolution)....this was bugging me so I tried out a
different encoder, that dynamically adapts the resolution when encoding
from dvd to divx....but still I see worse quality watching these
scenes....however using mplayer the quality improves somewhat...
