here is a textual version of the article
"In greifbarer Nähe - Video-DVDs unter Linux
abspielen" (It's almost done - Playing Video-DVDs
with Linux) from the german
c't Magazin, 15/2001, Page 124-127.

It's about playing Video-DVDs with Linux and
compares "OMS", "Xine", "Ogle", "VideoLAN",
"MPlayer" and the commercial "LinDVD" and
"PowerDVD".

Der Player von Arpad Gereoffy ist als universelles
Videoabspielprogramm gedacht. Mit Hilfe der
libmpeg2-Bibliothek von Aaron Holtzmann & Michael
Lespinasse unterstützt er die Wiedergabe von MPEG-1/-2,
AVI-Format mit Hilfe des Win32-DLL-Loaders der
AVIfile-Bibliothek, sowie OpenDivX. Wunschgemäß bannt
MPlayer in letzterem Format auch Videos auf Festplatte.
Natürlich darf auch VCD- und insbesondere
Video-DVD-Support nicht fehlen. Wer Besitzer einer
Matrox-Karte mit Dual-Head ist, kommt dabei sogar in
den Genuss der direkten TV-Out-Unterstützung. Auf Wunsch 
übernimmt der Player auch die Authentifizierung und
Dekodierung verschlüsselter Video-DVDs. Dazu muss man
MPlayer allerdings mit LibCSS verlinken. Insgesamt
gibt sich MPlayer spartanisch. Die vorliegende Version
0.18pre3 "BugCounter", ist eine reine
Kommandozeilenapplikation. Von der grafischen
Bedienoberfläche gibt es bisher nur einen Screenshot.
Über ein im Video eingeblendetes On Screen Display (OSD)
zeigt MPlayer die verstrichene Zeit, eine
Fortschrittsanzeige beim Spulen oder die Lautstärke an.
Leider gibt es bisher keine Möglichkeit zwischen Tonspuren
zu wechseln. MPlayer spielt blind die erste Spur ab,
sodass man - auch bei vielen deutschen Video-DVDs in
den "Genuss" englischer Sprache kommt.
Beim Abspielen von Video-DVDs produziert MPlayer beim
Einsatz von XVideo oder SDL eine deutliche geringere
CPU-Last als die meisten seiner Mitstreiter. Unschön:
VOBs muss man einzeln von der gemounteten DVD abspielen.

The player from Arpad Gereoffy is ment to be an universal
video player. With the help of the libmpeg2-library from 
Aaron Holtzmann & Michael Lespinasse it supports the
playback of MPEG-1/-2, AVI files with the help of the
Win32-DLL-Loader from the AVIfile library, as well as
OpenDivX. With the latter, MPlayer even saves Video
to harddisk just as expected. Of course, VCD- and 
especially Video-DVD support is included.
Anyone with a Matrox Dual-Head graphics adapter
can automatically use the direct support for TV-Out.
If needed, the player does authentification and
decryption of encrypted Video-DVDs, if MPlayer was
linked with LibCSS.
All in all, MPlayer looks quite spartan: the current version
0.18pre3 "BugCounter" is a pure command-line application.
Regarding the GUI, there is only a snapshot at the moment.
With the means of an On Screen Display (OSD), MPlayer
shows the expired time of the video, a progress bar while
skipping or the current volume. Unfortunately, there is
no possibilty of changing between the different audio streams
at the moment. MPlayer always plays the first stream, so
you get english audio even with many german Video-DVDs.
While playing Video-DVDs with XVideo or SDL, MPlayer 
produces a significant lesser CPU usage than most of
his competitors. A disadvantage: VOBs have to be played
one by one from a mounted DVD.
