I recompiled with this version (below), as you said from CVS:

MPlayer CVS-011226-00:00-2.95.4 (C) 2000-2001 Arpad Gereoffy (see DOCS!)

Then I copied the newly installed codecs.conf to ~/.mplayer/codecs.conf
make install also installs a copy in /usr/local/share/mplayer/codecs.conf,
which I left there.

The problem is still not solved.

I did (I trimmed a few of the permission errors):

/$ find -name codecs.conf
find: ./usr/src/lame3.70: Permission denied
./usr/src/MPlayer-0.60pre1/etc/codecs.conf
./usr/src/MPlayer-20011226/etc/codecs.conf
./usr/local/share/mplayer/codecs.conf
find: ./etc/ppp: Permission denied
find: ./etc/chatscripts: Permission denied
find: ./home/abe: Permission denied
find: ./home/windhawk: Permission denied
find: ./home/sharon: Permission denied
find: ./home/nylon66: Permission denied
./home/pardsbane/.mplayer/codecs.conf
find: ./opt/lib/listar/Maildir: Permission denied
find: ./opt/src/kernel-crap/scripts/lxdialog: Permission denied

As you can see, the 4 codecs.conf's should not be a problem, two are not
anywhere they could be causing trouble, and 3 are exact copies of each other
(/usr/src/MPlayer-0.60pre1 is the different one)

I've currently tried 0.60pre1 and the tarballs dated 12/25 and 12/26, all of
them have this problem...

Thanks for all your help, even without being able to play these few files,
MPlayer is obviously invaluable.

Josh
