For DVD play: read DOC/cd-dvd.html (basically you need
libdvdread+libdvdcss, there are instructions in this file)

Maybe you have already something that gets the sound device ?  (ESD or
some other app) check your alsa device (FWIW, with oss it's /dev/dsp).
