The problem with the 'default' for your skins:

To be able to use the GUI, you need skins installed.  There is no skin compiled into the source.
Skins should be placed in: /usr/local/shared/mplayer/Skin/<skinname>
and world readable (unless you only use mplayer as root).

This default location can be changed in the configure script using the --datadir function. (See DOCS/skin-en.html
for details.  (Or use your language file.)
