mencoding is failing about 20% through a dvd rip.

Anybody know what might be causing the assert to fail? (yes, i know it's part
of lame). Notice that shorter files have no problem.
system info:
MPlayer-20011201 package from webpage.
at one time or another a mandrake 8.1 installation.
gcc-3.0.2 and all the relevant packages from TFM.
