hmm, is it using same res for fullscreen in both cases? maybe in -fs res 
XVideo is not supported and sdl falls back to x11 with softwarescaling.
(usually this can be achieved by -noxv switch, try -forcexv maybe it helps, 
otherwise if nothing og thr above maybe broken sdl or xvideo driver).
